The Malthouse in Stradbally was the location for the recent STEAM Camp which proved a great success.

STEAM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Ecology, Art and Maths.

The STEAM drew the Arts Office, STEM Engagement Officer and Biodiversity Offices together to present this four-day Camp.

Seventeen children and young people got to try their hands at creating pigments and inks, form locally sourced foliage and plants.

They used the inks to make pictures, notes on a handmade book, which they made themselves, under the guidance of artist, Leonie Connellan.

They worked with Edel Herren, an ecologist and Heritage in Schools expert to examine the local biodiversity in the surrounding venue.

They made notes and learned about the various species, flora and fauna abundant in the area.

Seanie Morris led them through creating paper rockets and building and driving a remote-controlled robot.

A visit was made to the Laois Arthouse where the participants got to view the current exhibition ‘towards a future floating’.

They also visited Laois Arthouse artist, Lia Laimbock in her studio. Lia discussed her art practice with the participants.

On conclusion of the week, they received a certificate of participation and a goody bag including a perennial plant which was sponsored by Tree World, Timahoe, Laois.
