Two young Laois lads to shave off their mullets during cancer charity event

Two local ten-year-olds are gearing up to sacrifice their distinctive mullet hairstyles next week to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Laois.

Ten-year-olds Páidí Ryan and Martin Kelly are fourth-class pupils at Emo National School who have proudly worn their mullets for over two years and are well-recognised around their local community for their unique look.

However, both boys have been personally affected by cancer in their families and want to make a difference.

The pair will take the stage at 8pm on Saturday, August 16, during the Relay for Life event at Emo Court to have their heads shaved in front of the crowd.

Despite feeling nervous about the prospect, both boys are excited to contribute to a cause they care deeply about.

Martin and Páidí have been busy collecting sponsorship money in the lead-up to their big moment.

The funds will go directly to the Irish Cancer Society to support local services in Laois, including volunteer drivers for hospital appointments and night nursing care.

Relay for Life Laois takes place over 24 hours at Wellingtonia Avenue in Emo Court, where community members take turns walking laps to support cancer survivors and remember those who have died from the disease.

The event features music, team tents, activities and an emotional “Candle of Hope” ceremony at dusk.

This year’s Relay for Life events across Ireland have already raised nearly €600,000.

The walkathon celebrates survivors with an opening lap, while decorated candle bags are lit throughout the night in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the 24-hour event at Emo Court to show support for cancer patients, survivors.
