In Pictures: All smiles in Colaiste Iosagain as 140 Leaving Cert students collect impressive results

It was all smiles in Colaiste Iosagain yesterday as 140 Leaving Certs and 25 Leaving Cert Applied students collected their results.

Despite a concern that the reduction in grades awarded would impact on results, principal Justin Brown reported that they actually received an uplift in grades overall.

Six students received over 550 points and 14 over 500 points.

Fionn Connolly with 601 points was the best result in the Leaving Certificate Established with five other students receiving over 550 points – Theo McGrath, Aoife Brothwood, Venamin Sahaidac, Jakub Szymoni and Gaia Rizzuto.

Once again the Leaving Cert Applied results were excellent with 14 students (56%) achieving distinctions.

Hannah McNulty received the highest mark with 98%, closely followed by Salem Fenlon on 97% and both Charlie Duffy and Alannah Walsh on 96%.

This means that once again a number of our LCA students are in line to receive the Fergal Quinn National Award for excellence.

Mr Brown said: “These results are a testimony to the hard work of all our students who should be very proud of their excellent achievements.

“I always said you would have to go far to find as dedicated and committed staff as you do here and these results continue to prove that.

“On behalf of the Board of Management and our three Deputy Principals – Ms. Walsh, Ms. O’Sullivan and Mr. McGlynn thank you.

“We would also like to acknowledge their Year Head Ms. Sugrue and Leaving Certificate Applied Co-ordinator Keith Bracken as well as our Guidance Team of Cathy Kane and Joan O’Hara”

“While it is important to acknowledge those that achieved high points we are extremely proud of the results across the board.

“Congratulations to all our students and their families. Despite the fact that the results were available online it was lovely to see so many of our students coming into the school to collect their results in the traditional hard copy.

“This combined with the fact that our 220 First Years started yesterday meant that there was a very busy but lovely atmosphere throughout the school.”

Mr Brown also took the opportunity to provide an update on the long awaited new school building for Portarlington.

He said: “With approximately 165 students leaving us last June and 220 First Years starting yesterday, our enrolment has increased again.

“We now have closer to 1200 students than 1100. Our Design Team have submitted to their Stage 2B Report to the Department so we are eagerly awaiting the green light to go to tender for our long awaited new school building which has been costed at €48 million.

“This year we are marking our Silver Jubilee – our school opened in 2000. Our celebrations started on Wednesday when we gathered as a whole staff to mark the occasion.

“In September we will launch our Jubilee Publication edited by our former colleague Peter Lowry.

“On Saturday September 27th we have a Mass celebrated by Bishop Denis Nulty in St. Michael’s Church and events back in the school afterwards.

“We will also have a Spoken Word event in December as part of the celebrations as well as our bi annual school musical in November.

“We have a busy few months ahead! We wish the class of 2025 continued happiness and success in their future endeavours.”
