Sadness in Portlaoise at the death of Timothy Crowe

The death has occurred of Timothy Crowe in Portlaoise, a former well-known local dentist and a hugely popular figure around Portlaoise Rugby Club and Laois Cricket.

A native of Donnybrook in Dublin, he moved to live in Laois and worked as a dentist in the old Midland Health Board.

He was heavily involved in Portlaoise Rugby Club, where he served as president and coached numerous teams over his years of involvement.

He was a constant warm and welcoming presence around the club and a particularly good-humoured part of any post-match gathering whether in the clubhouse or the various pubs around town that hosted club events.

For many local rugby players of a certain vintage, their first proper moulded gumshield will have been fitted by Timothy, a most useful service he provided for those starting out in the game.

He was also a talented cricket player, playing for a long number of years with Portlaoise Cricket Club and acting as both a recruiter of players and as a strong link between the clubs when cricket’s home was in Togher.

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Tallaght University Hospital.

Sadly missed by his loving wife Miriam and children Conor and Rory and Conor’s partner Bernadette, brothers Morgan and James and sister Mary. Brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family and former colleagues in HSE Laois.

Timothy’s funeral mass takes place on Monday at 2pm in SS Peter and Pauls Church Portlaoise followed by interment in SS Peter and Pauls Cemetery.
