Portlaoise College welcomed 192 new first-year students through its doors this September, marking a significant milestone in the school’s history.

With this intake, the student population has surpassed 1,000 for the first time since the college was established.

To commemorate the occasion, each first-year student had their photo taken on the day, which will be presented to them in a special folder.

In recognition of this achievement, one student was randomly selected as the 1,000th enrolment.

The honour went to Emlyn Lijo, who was presented with a voucher for the school canteen—a small but meaningful way to mark the event. She is pictured with fellow first-year student Luke Fitzgerald, holding the commemorative photo.

The arrival of this year’s cohort reflects the continued growth of Portlaoise College and the trust families place in its community.

Staff at the college emphasise not only academic excellence but also the importance of support, guidance, and encouragement for every pupil.

This milestone has been made possible by the dedication of staff and the steadfast support of parents.

At the heart of the school’s ethos is a commitment to helping students reach their full potential while feeling welcomed and valued from the very beginning of their secondary school journey.

Principal Noel Daly said: “Reaching the 1,000 pupil mark is a proud moment for our school community.

“What matters most, however, is ensuring that each student feels supported and valued.

“Our focus remains on helping every young person to reach their potential, both in the classroom and beyond.”

With over 1,000 pupils now enrolled, the college remains committed to maintaining a culture where students are encouraged to grow, both academically and personally.
