Laois PPN, in collaboration with Healthy Laois, hosted the launch event for European Mobility Week.

This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of reducing car dependency and promoting more sustainable travel choices.

Walking, cycling, and using public transport not only reduce emissions but also contribute to improved wellbeing, reduced congestion, and a cleaner environment for everyone.

As part of the launch, a cycle event took place along the new cycleway in Dunmore Wood, with students from Our Lady’s Meadow National School participating.

The event was guided by the local cycling group Pedal Vintage Durrow who ensured a safe and enjoyable cycle for all.

The students were enthusiastic about the new amenity and were the first group to officially cycle along the freshly completed cycleway, which had just opened that weekend.

To further promote sustainable travel, the students travelled from their school to Dumore Wood using Local Link, a local public transport service.

This journey showcased the benefits of using alternative modes of transport, reinforcing the message of reducing car dependency.

Dan Bergin, Laois PPN Co-Ordinator said: “European Mobility Week is a wonderful opportunity to promote sustainable transport.

“Thanks to Pedal Vintage Durow and Local Link for supporting this initiative.

“A special thanks to the pupils of Our Lady’s Meadow N.S. for their participation, energy and enthusiasm.

“Their involvement truly brought the event to life and demonstrated the passion our younger generation has for creating a more sustainable future.”

Laois PPN consists of 700+ Member Groups from the Community, Social Inclusion and Environmental Pillars.

All groups registered with Laois PPN are given the opportunity to attend Laois PPN events.

Any group wishing to join Laois PPN can do so by completing the application on the Laois PPN website www.laoisppn.ie.
