Well-known Laois family set to take on fundraising Camino in memory of beloved dad and husband

A well known Laois family are set to get their walking boots on and take on the Camino for a fundraiser.

The Heffernans from Killeshin, along with 30 of their friends and family, are set to embark of the task from October 15.

They are raising money in aid of the Irish Heart Foundation in memory of the late Michael Heffernan.

Almost 10 years ago, on November 4 2015, Michael lost his life to cardiac arrest.

And now, his wife Helen, sons John, Conor and Dale plus daughter Amy, are all set to walk in his memory.

The Heffernans are extremely well known in Laois GAA circles as Conor has represented the county at senior level for the last number of years.

He lined out at midfield on the teams that achieved National League Division 4 glory and reached the Tailteann Cup final in 2023.

His brother John is heavily involved in coaching in Killeshin and was with their U-15 team who won the Feile this year.

While Dale was with the Laois U-16s this year and is full back on the Crettyard-Spink team who have reached the minor final and will take on Portlaoise this coming Sunday.

Amy has already tasted championship glory this year as she was corner back on the Killeshin Ladies team that defeated Portlaoise in the Junior Championship final.

The Heffernan family explained why they have decided to take on this fundraiser.

They said: “10 years ago on the 4th November 2015, our beloved Daddy and brilliant husband lost his life to cardiac arrest.

“This year, to mark his untimely passing, the Heffernan family, along with 30 of our friends and family will be completing the Camino De Frances pilgrimage walk.

“Starting on the 15th of October, we will cover 111km over five short days.

“In conjunction with our journey, we hope to support a cause close to us- the Irish Heart Foundation.

“This organisation is dedicated to preventing premature death and disability from heart disease and stroke.

“We would greatly appreciate any contributions to this worthy charity.”
