Borris-Mountmellick Municipal meetings to go on the road and new chain for 2026

The chamber in Laois County Council has been the home for all recent public meetings for the past number of years.

Whether it’s a full council or a Municipal District, the meetings have been held in the main chamber in the years since Covid. Prior to that some of the local district meetings were held in some of the council’s various smaller rooms.

But the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District will be taking some of their monthly meetings to locations around the county in 2026.

It was agreed at the recent meeting to hold some of next year’s meetings around the district with the likes of the Town Hall in Mountmellick, the new Community Hub in Camross and libraries in Mountrath and Rathdowney thought to be suitable venues for councillors, council staff and media.

It was also confirmed that a new chain of office for this district will be introduced in 2026 for the chairman of the day. The current chairman is Fine Gael councillor Conor Bergin from Borris-in-Ossory but his term will be up in June.

The old Mountmellick Town Council, which was disbanded following a revamp of Local Authorities in 2014, had a chain for its serving chairman but a new chain has been commissioned for this role.

Indeed such is the volume of events that the overall Cathaoirleach is invited to in an official capacity, having an additional chain of office for the Municipal District’s chairperson will take some of the burden away.

There is also believed to be some smaller localised recognition for individuals and groups that don’t get a full civic reception.
