Portlaoise College was alive with colour, flavour, and celebration this week as students, parents and staff came together for the school’s much-loved Intercultural Day.
With over thirty nationalities represented within the school community, the event offered a vibrant display of global culture, unity, and pride.
Students set up beautifully decorated stands featuring flags, traditional clothing, and food from their native countries, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the school.
From the jollof rice of Nigeria to the sweetness of the Brazilian chocolates, the tastes and sounds of the day reflected the diversity that makes Portlaoise College.
The stands were carefully judged by Aran Grehan, Community Garda; Josephine Moore, LOETB School Support Coordinator; and George Leahy, General Manager of the Midlands Park Hotel.
After much deliberation, the judges selected China, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Pakistan/Sudan as the winning stands — praised for their creativity, authenticity, and engagement.
Event organiser and teacher Sean O’Neill expressed his joy at the occasion.
He said: “Intercultural Day is always my favourite day of the school year.
“It’s a wonderful celebration of our students’ diversity and unity, giving them the chance to share their cultures with pride while promoting inclusion, understanding, and mutual respect within our school community here in Portlaoise College.”
Principal Noel Daly also commended the efforts of students and staff.
He said: “Intercultural Day is a highlight of our school calendar. It showcases the incredible diversity and sense of belonging that defines Portlaoise College.
“We are very proud of our students and their enthusiasm in sharing their cultures with the wider school community.”
The day was a fantastic celebration of the vibrant community of teachers and students that makes up Portlaoise College.
