Soccer: All the latest CCFL results as Stradbally Town march on in Leinster Junior Shield

Clonmore/Riverside 1 Stradbally Town 3
Leinster Junior Shield Round 3

After overcoming Leinster Senior League and Wexford League opposition in the previous two rounds Stradbally were handed a trip to fellow CCFL club CRFC in Round 3 of the LFA shield on Sunday morning.

The away side started brightly dominating possession and forcing a large volume of corners with Eoin Buggie, James Devoy and Cillian Maher all coming close each time from pinpoint Conor Buggie deliveries.

Stradbally then saw a Cillian Maher free kick rocket off the home crossbar in the 22nd minute.

The home side had their best chance on 28 minutes when a moment of hesitancy in the away box saw their centre forward just shoot over from 12 yards.

The goal was coming though and when Benny Lawlor sent a ball across from left to right in the 37th minute, it found Conor Buggie cutting in from the right and he struck home with a fine finish to give the away side the lead.

Stradbally then had Jack Larkin to thank as he made a superb save just on the stroke of Half time, tipping over from close range, with Stradbally leading 1-0 at half time

Clonmore threw a bit more into attack in the second period with nothing to lose and against the breeze Stradbally were finding chances a little harder to come by and they received a wakeup call on 66 minutes when Clonmore struck a rasper of free kick to Jack Larkin’s top right hand corner, giving him no chance a fine strike from Clonmore’s central midfielder.

The away side were in a game now, but they knuckled down and when Cillian Maher was upended in the area on 78 minutes Benny Lawlor stood up and cooly slotted the resulting penalty low to the keeper’s right.

Passage to the next Round was complete on 86 minutes when Cillian Maher and Conor Buggie did a one two with Maher’s cross low across found Eoin Buggie at the back post where Eoin Buggie finished off the game with a third goal.

For the men in green, Tom Shiel was outstanding at the heart of defence with Sean Devoy, Cillian Maher and Benny Lawlor also standing out.

They now await the Round 4 draw where more stiff opposition is guaranteed but they seem to be enjoying this run just now and will hope to continue it next day out.
