Five schools in Laois are set to benefit from funding as part of the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme.

So says Fine Gael TD Willie Aird and Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming who were delighted to announce the news this afternoon.

Three of the schools that were chosen are primary schools – Sandy Lane NS Portarlington, Killenard NS and St Colman’s NS Stradbally.

While Clonaslee College and Heywood Community School were the two successful secondary schools.

This scheme was previously known as the Summer Works Scheme, but the strong emphasis is now on sustainability.

Schools can now install LED lighting, insulation upgrades, EV Chargers, bike rack facilities and other climate-focused works and regular maintenance in the school.

Deputy Aird said: “I’m delighted to see funding for schools in Laois as part of the rollout of the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme.

“This scheme has allowed schools to undertake measures such as insulation upgrades, LED lighting installation, EV charger provision, bike-rack facilities to support active travel and other climate-focused works alongside traditional maintenance.

“Across the country, 297 projects have been approved, with €30m of total funding ring-fenced for refurbishment of science labs.

“This scheme has really prioritised investment in science laboratory refurbishment.

“This will help support the rollout of the new leaving certificate curriculum which aims to ensure that students have the skills they need to thrive after they finish school.

“I welcome Minister McEntee’s confirmation that she plans to ensure that this scheme will be done annually to facilitate the ongoing investment in the maintenance and upgrade of schools.

“I want to congratulate all schools in Laois that received funding and look forward to seeing the completed works.”

While Deputy Fleming added: “I want to compliment the schools on their excellent application for enviromental and maintenance works to be carried out in their schools during the next summer holiday.

“It is good that these schools have been approved thereby guaranteeing the works will proceed.”
