In Pictures: Mountmellick Town Centre First Plan launch ‘a resounding success’

Mountmellick came together in force for the launch of the Town Centre First Plan, marking a memorable evening for the entire community in the surrounds of Mountmelllick Library.

The event on Tuesday evening, November 18, showcased the town’s shared commitment to regeneration.

Information displays highlighting potential future project ideas attracted attention and are drawn from the Town Centre First Plan.

This plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap for revitalising Mountmellick town centre.

On the evening, attendees were addressed by Laois County Council’s Cathaoirleach Cllr Barry Walsh, Director of Services for Planning, Regeneration & Economic Development Angela McEvoy as well as Chair of the Mountmellick Town Team Fran Baker.

Also present on the evening were TD Brian Stanley, Cllr Paddy Bracken, Cllr Paddy Buggy, Laois County Council Chief Executive Michael Rainey, SLR Consulting who assisted with the TCF plan and members of the Government’s Town Centre First Office.

The evening was an opportunity for the local community to celebrate the launch of the town centre first Plan which is an important milestone for the town.

In commending the contribution of all involved, Town Team Chair, Fran Baker said: “This plan belongs to the people of Mountmellick. It showcases their ideas, their priorities, and their hopes for the future which we have been privileged to put into writing.

“The publication of this plan is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision.

“From the initial community wide survey and business survey that shaped the plan’s priorities to the extensive consultation process that gathered valuable feedback on proposed projects, the community’s voice has been central every step of the way.”

While the launch was a major milestone, ongoing community involvement remains essential.

Work will continue as the Town Team and Laois County Council strive to secure funding to bring these initiatives to life.

Denise Rainey, Town Regeneration Officer at Laois County Council said: “Whether you are a business owner, a community leader, or a resident, your voice matters.

“The Town Team has an open invitation to new volunteers to join us in shaping the next chapter of the town’s regeneration. As projects develop, we will need more members to help out.

“If you would like to get involved, please get in touch. Mountmellick Town Team, and Laois County Council’s Regeneration Section, would like to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the consultations, surveys, and workshops, and all who engaged with the plan throughout the past year.”

The Mountmellick Town Centre First Plan sets out a strategic vision to make Mountmellick a vibrant, accessible, and sustainable town for residents, businesses, and visitors.

Work on the draft plan began in late 2024 and involved extensive community consultation, including public information evenings, surveys, online engagement, and workshops.

The plan reflects the priorities and aspirations of the people of Mountmellick.

The plan will be on public display in the offices of the Mountmellick Development Association, Mountmellick Library, the offices of Laois County Council Portlaoise and online at www.laois.ie. from Tuesday November 18.

The Mountmellick Town Centre First Plan forms part of the Government of Irelands Town Centre First Policy and Our Rural Future Strategy.
