Portlaoise CBS 6-16 Wexford CBS 0-5
South Leinster Colleges SFC ‘B’ Round 2
Portlaoise CBS maintained their 100% record in the South Leinster Colleges SFC ‘B’ with a massive win away from home this afternoon.
The Laois school were 29 point winners away at Wexford CBS to stay top of their group.
The Laois school got off to a flying start with two points from Darren Brennan and a Conor O’Callaghan free.
Good interplay from Sean Tuohy and Oran Darcy sent Janes Doyle through and he scored the games first goal soon after, low to the corner.
That made it 1-3 to no score after only seven mins played. O’Callaghan then slotted over another free after Tadgh Slattery was fouled following a slalom run through four Wexford players.
Slattery then turned provider for an Oran Darcy goal. After a great catch from Cormac Deegan from the kickout, he found Joe Larkin bearing down on goal and the Stradbally man buried the ball past the keeper.
Wexford CBS registered their first score in the 21st minute from a free.
Darren Brennan added a point after good Larkin and Slattery inter-play. David Timmons then sent a long weighted ball to Darcy who popped it to Tuohy and he made no mistake rattling the Wexford net.
Portlaoise finished the half with a Cormac Deegan score after Darcy’s pointed effort rebounded off the post, and points from Brennan and O’Callaghan left the score 4-9 to 0-1 at half time.
In the second half, the Portlaoise backs were winning all their battles with Sean Powders and Dan Downey excelling down the centre.
Harry Browne and Davy Delaney were diligent throughout and the Portlaoise backs held Wexford to only three points from play.
Great work from Downey, up the line to O’Callaghan set up Timmons for the fifth CBS goal.
After a superb Conor Dunne save from a penalty, Portlaoise saw out the game with scores from Darcy, Eoghan Deegan, and a lovely Conor O’Callaghan goal after he dummy hand-passed the Wexford defender to slot the ball home.
CBS now play their final group game at home against FCJ Bunclody this Tuesday, November 25, at 11.30am.
