Big day in Camross as dignitaries set to arrive for official opening of the Poet’s Cottage

The red carpet will be rolled out in Camross this Friday for the official opening of the Poet’s Cottage Community Cafe.

Located in the heart of the village, beside the primary school and the wonderful community complex and across the road from the playschool and the renowned Bergin’s Camross Inn, the Poet’s Cottage is like something from a postcard.

Stone walls and thatched roof, it is a replica of an 1800s Irish cottage and named after poet Patrick Ryan who lived in Camross between 1750 and 1825 and wrote about the natural beauty of the area.

In a modern twist, the premises has been converted into a community coffee shop and opened for business earlier this year.

It’s a wonderful example of local community endeavour and its a pleasure to visit.

The development has been supported by €250,000 from the Just Transition Fund.

“The Community of Camross extend a warm welcome to you all to join them for the
opening of their Poet’s Cottage Community Café,” say the organisers.

“There will be music, song and refreshments and we will be joined by Government Ministers, TDs, members of Laois County Council, Pobal, ERMA and other guests will join us.

“There will be an opportunity to view the Poet’s Café during the day and enjoy listening
to our local Historian Paddy Dooley reflect on the history of the cottage and regale us
with stories of times past.Members of Camross Camogie Team, recent winners of the Leinster Camogie Cup will also join us on the day.”

The event gets underway at 1.30pm.
