People First Credit Union encourages applications from community and voluntary groups by Monday, 8th December at 9am.
People First Credit Union has announced an extension to the application deadline for its annual Community Champions Award, giving community and voluntary groups additional time to apply for the €10,000 funding prize which will be awarded to one local community group.
Applications will now remain open until Monday, 8th December at 9am.
The Community Champions Award supports one major local project each year that demonstrates innovation, sustainability, and long-term community benefit.
The Credit Union is particularly encouraging applications from groups that are planning capital projects with a strong focus on environmental change and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles.
A Focus on Lasting Community Impact
People First Credit Union is seeking initiatives that will leave a lasting legacy. Groups are encouraged to submit projects that improve local environments, enhance amenities, support climate action, or strengthen community infrastructure.
As part of the application, groups are asked to outline:
- A clear description of the proposed project
- The benefits it will bring to the community
- Estimated costings or a rough project budget
The award is open to all community and voluntary groups, including development associations, clubs, charities, and local action groups.
Celebrating Previous Winners
Now in its third year, the Community Champions Award has already supported transformative initiatives across the region:
2024 Winner – Ballinakill Community Development Association
Last year’s €10,000 award supported the development of the innovative Ballinakill Walking Trail App, designed to enhance local tourism, promote outdoor activity, and highlight the natural and historical beauty of the area. The app has become a valuable resource for both locals and visitors.
2023 Winner – Portlaoise Tidy Towns
Portlaoise Tidy Towns used their €10,000 award to invest in significant environmental improvements, including a rainwater harvesting system and eco-garden enhancements. Their project continues to support biodiversity, education, and sustainable community development.
These success stories illustrate the powerful and lasting impact that dedicated volunteers can make with the right support.
A Call to Local Groups
Speaking about the deadline extension, People First Credit Union said:
“This award is our way of empowering the incredible groups who work tirelessly to improve their communities.
“We are especially keen to support capital projects that bring long-term environmental or sustainability benefits. We encourage all eligible groups to submit their applications before the closing date.”
