The updated National Development Plan for the Department of Justice includes two projects in Portlaoise.
Laois TD Sean Fleming confirmed that the plan contains a project that would see the Midlands Prison extended.
While funding is also being provided for the completion of the major extension and redevelopment of the Garda Síochána Divisional Headquarters for Laois/Offaly which in Portlaoise.
Work is well underway on this project and the Garda Síochána confirmed to me that this major improvement works will be completed on time and the Gardai expect to be back in the newly extended and upgraded Divisional Headquarters in 2027.
However, Deputy Fleming says that the new courthouse in Portlaoise has not been included for construction.
He said: “I am disappointed that the new courthouse for Portlaoise that is badly needed had not being given the go ahead for construction at this stage.
“I have spoken directly with Minister Jim O’Callaghan and the Taoiseach, Micheál Martin in recent days about the urgent need for the new courthouse.
“I have asked for a commitment that planning for this project commences as soon as possible so that it can proceed to tendering and construciton at the first available opportunity.
“As a TD for Laois I know it is very important to move the Courthouse from the Main Street in Portlaoise to its new location and I will continue to work on this until we achieve progress.”
In relation to the Garda Station and the Midlands Prison, Deputy Fleming welcomed both developments.
He said: “With the increase in population in Laois and Offaly the reality is we need a greater presence of the Gardai on the ground and improved facilities in the station in Portlaoise.
“Six major projects have been highlighted by the Minister in relation to our prisons.
“The Midlands Prison in Portlaoise is specifically mentioned for an extension.
“Tendering will start promptly for 2 separate projects in the Midlands Prison which will provde 250 new prison places.
“180 new spaces will be provided on a new additional wing and there will be 70 new spaces created on the circular landings. Tendering for this work will commence in 2026.”
