Laois TD presses Minister for Finance for answers on ‘long-delayed’ Rathdowney fire station

Laois TD Willie Aird has called for urgent Government action to deliver a new fire station for Rathdowney.

The Fine Gael TD raised the issue directly with Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris during Questions on Promised Legislation in Dáil Éireann recently.

Deputy Aird highlighted that Rathdowney fire station has been awaiting replacement for more than 20 years, despite a site being acquired in 2003, Part 8 planning approval being completed, and Laois County Council formally prioritising the project in the 2026–2030 Fire Service Capital Programme.

He noted that the existing station is “outdated, overcrowded and lacking proper facilities for female staff”, despite Rathdowney having the largest number of female firefighters in Laois.

He also praised the local crew for continuing to provide an excellent emergency service to homes, schools, farms and businesses across a wide catchment area.

Deputy Aird asked the Tánaiste to commit to prioritising funding for the new station and to provide a clear timeline for when long-promised capital funding will be released.

He said: “A new station is essential for proper training conditions, adequate facilities and a stronger response capacity. Rathdowney has waited long enough.

“Will the Tánaiste commit to funding this project and finally give us a definite timeframe?”

In response, Tánaiste Simon Harris confirmed that Rathdowney is now the number one fire-service priority for Laois County Council, following the progression of the Stradbally station project to tender.

The Tánaiste stated that a proposed site, considered ideally located for access, traffic flow and centrality, has now been confirmed by Laois County Fire and Rescue Service.

He added that the national 2026–2030 Fire Service Capital Programme is currently being finalised, after which clearer timelines will be available.

“We are absolutely committed to progressing the proposed new Rathdowney station,” the Tánaiste said, noting that further discussions will take place once the capital programme is approved.

Deputy Aird welcomed the Tánaiste’s comments but said he will continue to push for a firm commitment and a published delivery schedule.

He said: “The people of Rathdowney deserve certainty. This project is ready to go, the need is clear, and the crews on the ground deserve proper facilities.

“I’ll be keeping the pressure on until we see shovels in the ground,” concluded Deputy Aird.
