Portloaise CBS are out of the South Leinster Colleges SFC ‘B’ after they were beaten by Rathangan this afternoon.
The Laois school were six points up at half time but lost by five in the end.
It is a game that they will look back on with some regret as they certainly had the chances to win it and reach the final.
Portlaoise CBS began with the breeze and opened up an early lead thanks to scores from Darren Brennan (2) and Conor O’Callaghan.
Rathangan showed their qualities from the start though and drew level by the 11th minute with three points of their own.
Oran Darcy and Eoghan Deegan re-established Portlaoise’s advantage and then they finished the half with two two-pointers.
One from Darcy and the other from Brennan to leave them 0-9 to 0-3 ahead at half time.
In truth, the lead could have been bigger with Conor O’Callaghan and Ethan Neilon both having goal chances – the first being saved and the other going wide.
Rathangan wasted little time in getting on top with the breeze when the second half started.
They scored a goal and slotted three more points to draw level by the 40th minute.
Portlaoise CBS had another goal chance after that but O’Callaghan was denied again and Rathangan went down the other end and pointed to take the lead for the first time.
Credit to the CBS though, they rallied and scored the next three points of the game.
Darren Brennan got the first with O’Callaghan and David Timmons also scoring to leave them 0-12 to 1-7 ahead with 15 minutes to play.
Rathangan cut the gap to one and then CBS had another goal chance but this time it was Oran Darcy who save his shot saved.
And the Kildare side drew level with a two pointer soon after before kicking the final five scores of the game.
