Sadness at death of John Hyland from Ballylinan

There is sadness in Laois this week at the death of John Hyland from Ballylinan, a man known far and wide in a variety of different capacities.

A diehard Laois GAA fan, he travelled the length and breadth of the country supporting the county teams.

Going back to the mid 90s when Laois won back-to-back All Ireland minor football titles, he took it upon himself to personally sponsor a man of the match in All Ireland minor finals.

He continued the process for a good number of years afterwards and was a regular presence at All Ireland celebrations.

John took any grievance against Laois teams very seriously and would lobby on issues like suspended players or venues.

The fortunes of the Ballylinan footballers was also close to his heart and he then followed Portarlington in recent years after he moved to live in the area.

On top of that he had a huge interest in horse and greyhound racing as well as being a staunch Republican with a massive gra for history and political discussion.

Late of Rathgilbert, Athy. Predeceased by his parents Madge and John Hyland, Rathgilbert House , Ballylinan and sister Ita (Curtis). Deeply regretted by his loving brothers and sisters Maureen, Bridie, Eilish, Denis, Michael and Imelda, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
