A young Laois man has been selected on the Triathlon Ireland’s high performance squad for 2026.
14-year-old Auryn Ryan from Inch Cross between Stradbally and Vicarstown and a 2nd year student in Portlaoise College was recently chosen on the Triathlon Ireland Youth Commission.
A member of Oughaval Athletic Club, Laois Marlins Swim Club and Athy Triathlon Club.
In November he applied for the Triathlon Ireland Youth Commission and was awarded his spot.
Being a member of the youth commission comes with some commitment having to
attend in person and some online sessions over the course of the year where they work with youths and advocate for triathlons with his peers.
Along with the team Auryn will help shape the future of Triathlon in Ireland.
Auryn also successfully qualified for a talent identification day with Triathlon Ireland.
Having swam 200 meters of the pool in 2:30 he also had to run 1,500 meters in less than 5:30 which led to his qualification for the next round of squad selection.
He then attended a training day to access his bike cycling abilities in Corkagh Park Dublin and then recently received news that he has qualified for the squad and has been invited onto the Triathlon Ireland High Performance Development Squad for 2026.
A new High Performance Pathway structure has been set up within Triathlon Ireland and led by the High Performance Pathway Coaching Team.
The purpose is to ensure that all of the Development Squad athletes are offered training and development opportunities that are appropriate for their age and stage.
This includes racing at domestic national series events and at international competitions.
Triathlon Ireland and the Pathway team will provide monthly training opportunities in the Sport Ireland campus and seasonal training camps to prepare athletes for the 2026 season and to develop the necessary race skills.
