The Laois Shopping Centre Premier Intermediate hurling championship was decided in O’Moore Park last night.

And Ballyfin were crowned champions following a 3-14 to 1-11 win over Rathdowney-Errill.

Dermot McGill and John Joe McHugh’s charges scored three goals against a gale force wind in the first half and that gave them the platform for victory.

It is a success that promotes them to Senior for 2026 and relegates Castletown in the process.

If Rathdowney-Errill had won, they would not have been promoted to the senior grade as they already have a team there.

In that case, Ballyfin would have played Castletown in a playoff as they lost the relegation final

And it means that they will play in the top tier on their own for the first time since 2012 – having more recently been at the top table as a Gaels with Mountmellick.

Just at full time, the heavens opened and the rain fell as captain James Finn gave his speech.

Nevertheless, supporters spilled out onto the pitch in great numbers afterwards.

Photographer Denis Byrne was there at full time and captured some great images.
