Three groups from Heywood Community School are part of 600 finalists who were selected from 1500 initial entries to showcase at the finals of this years Stripe Young Scientist Exhibition.
Heywood has a strong tradition in the competition and students from all year groups are encouraged to take part.
This year’s competition is being sponsored for the first time by Stripe and it takes place from January 7 to 10.
This gives an added local interest as the founders of Stripe, Patrick and John Collison are the owners of Abbeyleix House and Estate.
Patrick is himself a former winner of the Young Scientist Competition and John was a category winner.
Aoibhinn Malone and Siona Lalor are competing in the Junior Category of the Social and Behavioural Science section.
Their project is ‘Exploring Taste Familiarity and Visual Recognition Accuracy of Fruit and Vegetables in Children aged 8-12’.
Zuzana Janokova and Luke Connolly are taking part in the Intermediate Category of the Health and Wellbeing section.
‘The Importance of EU regulations on make-up products’ is the title of their project.
While Ashling Gonzalez and Elle Donavan are in the Intermediate Category of the Social and Behavioural Science section.
Their project is called ‘How early is too early? The link between the age joining social media screen time and beauty influencer exposure’.
