It has been a magical week for Laois students at the Stripe Young Scientist of the Year Exhibition – and the good news keeps coming.
Grace O’Shaughnessy of Durrow, won 2nd Place in the individual Health and Wellbeing intermediate category.
Grace is a student of Presentation Secondary School Thurles.
Her project is entitled “Game on or Game over: the impact of competition pressures on the health and wellbeing of teenage girls”.
She really impressed the judges, and indeed Taoiseach Micheal Martin, with her excellent project.
Meanwhile, Heywood CS duo Aoibhinn Malone and Siona Lalor competed in the Junior Category of the Social and Behavioural Science section.
Their project is ‘Exploring Taste Familiarity and Visual Recognition Accuracy of Fruit and Vegetables in Children aged 8-12’ – and they took first place in their category.
Last night, Portlaoise CBS Leaving Cert student Joshua Corbett finished 2nd overall.
The Vicarstown student impressed the judges with his project ‘There’s Plenty of Room to Breakthrough at the Bottom’.

Josh’s project is an innovative AI-driven approach to overcoming preclinical failures and advancing brain drug delivery.
Joshua was also named the overall category winner for chemistry, mathematics and physics.

This is the second time that Joshua has been recognised at the competition after he finished second in the Senior Technology Individual Category.
