Prizes up for grabs as St Abban’s launch details of brand new race on St Brigid’s Day

St Abban’s AC will host Laois’ newest 5km race on St Brigid’s Day, Sunday February 1.

The club also run the hugely successful Fit4Life series throughout the summer, but this is the first time they will host on 5km race along this route.

The Coal Miners 5km has been adopted as the name of the event due to the club’s close proximity to Coal Mines in Castlecomer, Rossmore and Wolfhill.

St Abbans’ complex will act as the race hub with number collection, toilets and parking all available at the clubhouse.

The race itself will begin only 200m from the track at St Mary’s Church, where it will make its way towards Castlecomer for 2.5km.

There, athletes will make a turn and return towards St Mary’s Church where the finish line will be erected.

This event is designed to welcome all types of participants, whether you’re a seasoned club runner chasing a personal best, a casual jogger looking for a new challenge, or someone taking their first steps into organised running.

The fast, flat course at St Abbans AC makes it ideal for athletes of all standards, offering the perfect opportunity to push yourself while enjoying a supportive and friendly atmosphere.

The event has plenty of prizes on offer for athletes. The winner of both the Ladies and Men’s race will take home €300, with 2nd place winning €200 and €150 for 3rd.

In the Junior Competition, the winner will claim €60, €40 for 2nd and €20 for 3rd.

Added to this there is category prizes for those O40, O50 and O60 with the winners getting €60 each.

A spokesperson said: “Beyond the competition, the race is about community.

“Expect encouragement from fellow runners, volunteers, and spectators, all coming together to celebrate fitness, fresh air, and a shared sense of achievement.

“Whether you plan to race hard, jog comfortably, or simply soak up the buzz on the sidelines, this 5km promises to be a fantastic Sunday morning event. Everyone is welcome – come and be part of it.
