Abbeyleix said farewell to one of its much-loved and highly-respected community men this week with the passing of Dan Murphy. He was aged in his mid 80s.
A native of Bansha in Tipperary, Dan moved to Abbeyleix more than 60 years ago due to a family connection with the Lalors and he was a close friend of Paddy Lalor, a TD and MEP for many years.
He quickly established himself as a vital cog in the community, heavily involved in a variety of groups.
He was a founding member and director of the Abbeyleix Credit Union, was involved with St Vincent de Paul, Active Retirement and a prominent member in Abbeyleix Golf Club.
Friendly, generous and good-humoured, he remained very proud of his Tipperary roots and took great pleasure in their All Ireland hurling success last summer.
Dan was pre-deceased by his wife Betty and passed away at home after a short illness.
He is survived by his son Daniel and daughter Gemma, Daniel’s partner Jen and grandson Max. Dear brother of Jonny, Margaret, Willie, Nancy and the late Emily.
Sadly missed by brothers and sisters in law, nieces ,nephews and his many relatives, neighbours and friends.
Dan’s funeral took place in Abbeyleix on Wednesday last with burial afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery.
