Portlaoise CBS 0-11 FCJ Bunclody 2-13
South Leinster Colleges JFC ‘B’ Final
There was heartbreak for Portlaoise CBS in SETU Carlow today as they were beaten in the South Leinster JFC ‘B’ final.
There were three controversial moments in the game and all of them went against the CBS.
Two of them resulted in goals for Bunclody and the other was of a direct consequence of the first goal.
The CBS played against the wind in the first half and managed the game reasonably well right until the stroke of half time.
Bunclody went into a five point lead after 12 minutes with Cathal Whelan landing two two-pointers and then they almost scored a goal but CBS keeper Dara Brosnan made a wonderful save to deny Conor Leary.
The CBS got off the mark with a David Timmons free and then Callum Devoy and Jayden Murphy scored soon after.
Bunclody remained six points clear but that was nine by the break after the first controversial incident.
A Bunclody player was fouled on the CBS 45 but referee Lar Murphy initially signalled the free the other way.
Bunclody took a solo and go with Murphy quickly changing the direction of his hand but as the CBS defence was coming out, presuming the free was theirs, there was space in behind and Eoghan Treacy nipped in to score a goal and make it 1-9 to 0-3.
The CBS management questioned the referee about this at half time and as a result, referee Murphy restarted the second half with a 14 metre free to Bunclody which Whelan pointed.
Despite this, the CBS came back after that as Ethan Neilon landed two massive two pointers to make it 1-10 to 0-7 after 35 minutes.
However, Bunclody responded with a point from Jamie Kane and then scored their second goal when Shane Carroll of the CBS caught a kickout and appeared to have the ball stripped illegally from his hands.
Referee Murphy waved play on and Cathal Pender eventually drove a shot low to the net.
To the CBS’ credit, they kept going with Neilon adding another two pointer as Jayden Murphy and Callum Devoy also scored.
They needed a goal and they had a late chance when Darragh Lalor kept a long ball alive but the ball flashed across goal and Bunclody prevailed.
