Laois County Council launches major new commuter survey

An early morning commuter service arrives at Portlaoise

Laois County Council is inviting residents to take part in a Commuter Survey which launches today (February 3).

The survey will provide an accurate and up-to-date snapshot of commuting patterns of people living in Laois and working outside the county.

Available at laois.ie/surveythis extensive exercise takes approximately five minutes to complete and will run for two weeks – until Tuesday, February 17.

Dom Reddin, Acting Head of Enterprise at Laois County Council said:

“For the first time ever commuters in Laois can have a say around how they feel about commuting so it’s vitally important that as many as possible participate in this online survey.

“We want to hear directly from Laois commuters about their experiences.

“The insights of Laois commuters matter to us and will help shape policies that make working closer to home a reality, reduce travel times and strengthen our local economy.”

“The anonymous survey will gather insights into:

  • Where Laois commuters travel for work and how often
  • Their current work status and commuting habits
  • Educational background, professional skills, and employment sectors
  • Attitudes toward living and working in Laois, including willingness to work locally or remotely.

Angela McEvoy, Director of Services at Laois County Council, said: “This survey is a vital step in understanding the skills and potential within our commuter population.

“By gathering this data, we can create strategies that attract investment and generate local employment, ensuring Laois continues to thrive as a great place to live and work.”

The findings will identify key locations within Laois where skills and talent are concentrated and will form the basis for future economic development strategies.

All survey feedback will help Laois County Council understand what factors influence commuting decisions and what supports could encourage more local employment opportunities.

The survey will be carried out by leading Market Research Company, Interactions Research.
