Gardai renew appeal for information following fatal road traffic collision in Laois

Gardai have renewed their appeal for information following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Laois last week.

The incident happened on Main Street around 7pm on Wednesday, January 28 and involved a man, aged in his 70s, and a car.

The man was later confirmed to be Jeremiah Anthony (Tony) Kavanagh from Thornberry who was laid to rest on Saturday, January 31.

A week on, Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

They said: “Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the fatal road traffic collision which occurred on Main Street, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois on Wednesday, 28th January 2026.

“The collision involving a car and a male pedestrian, aged in his 70s, occurred at approximately 7pm.

“The pedestrian was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore where he was later pronounced deceased.

“No other injuries were reported.

“Gardaí are renewing their appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

“Any road users, who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday 28th January 2026 are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
