Laois playground to undergo massive upgrade after securing €20,000 government grant

A Laois playground is set to undergo a massive upgrade after it was approved for a €20,000 grant from the government.

According to Laois TD Sean Fleming, the playground in Mountrath is the recipient of the funding.

The money is to be spent on upgrades and is set to include a biodiversity element.

Works that can be included under this scheme are as follows:

  • Wheelchair-accessible seesaws
  • Inclusive Sensory Playground Equipment
  • Biodiversity improvements in the playground

Deputy Fleming: “A condition of this grant was that there had to be local consultation with children and young people before the application was submitted.

“What is also important as part of this grant approval is that the Council comes up with 25% of the amount provided by the Government i.e. €5,000.

“It is important that these works be carried out as quickly as is practical so that people in the Mountrath area who use the playground can get the advantage of these improvements as early as possible.”

Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, also confirmed the news.

She said: “I am delighted to announce this capital funding that will directly benefit families and children in every corner of Ireland.

“These grants will enable city and county councils to create and upgrade playgrounds, making them more accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.

“I want to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to the local authorities for their applications and I look forward to seeing the benefits these projects will provide to local communities for many years to come.”
