Laois Hurling Podcast: Austin Bergin, the Laois man in Naas on the huge rise of Kildare hurling

The Laois and Kildare hurlers meet in the Joe McDonagh Cup final in Croke Park on Sunday in what is a surprise and novel pairing.

Kildare have been the story of the competition. Having never won a game in this grade previously, they have beaten Westmeath, Carlow and Laois – established counties at this level – in successive rounds.

Ballacolla man Austin Bergin has had a ringside seat for the rise of Kildare hurling and has played his own significant part, serving as Naas hurling chairman as they began their dominance of the local club scene as well as their All Ireland club intermediate success.

He chats to us about Naas’s decision to play underage hurling in Kilkenny, what the club scene is like in Kildare and the ongoing football-hurling challenges.
