Students at a Laois primary school recently gave the first performance of their new song ‘The Day the Music Died’.
The children of St Colmcille’s National School, Errill, have been working on the song to remember and commemorate The Great Famine in their area.
The project was inspired by the work of the Errill Famine Commemoration Committee and is part of the Errill Famine Pot Project.
In collaboration with Creative Ireland Laois, a series of song-writing workshops were facilitated in the school by Nuala Kelly of Music Generation Laois.
The Errill Famine song – ‘The Day the Music Died’ – was performed in front of a live audience for the very first time at the recent opening of the newly-refurbished St Bernadette’s Community Hall.
The official debut of the song was performed students from third class through to sixth class accompanied by pianist, Mary Wisely, and Nuala Kelly on guitar.
This powerful and evocative song will soon be professionally recorded by the children, and available for listening on a number of platforms.
The song will be available via a QR code displayed at the Errill Famine Garden when further works are completed.
