Two Laois students win national carbon monoxide safety competition

Two students from Scoil Naomh Eoin Killenard have won a nationwide poster competition to raise awareness of carbon monoxide and the dangers that it can pose in our homes.

Andrew Duffy and Mateo Mannion de Leon were chosen as the winners just before school finished in June.

Children from Ms Madden’s and Ms Kelly’s classes participated in the Energize STEM programme through Junior Achievement Ireland.

Principal Stephen Donovan was thrilled for the lads and also thanked David Prendergast, parent of past pupils, who has volunteered to facilitate the programme in the school for the last number of years with the support of his employers Deloitte.

Gas Networks Ireland, in partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI), called for entries to a carbon monoxide safety poster competition from students who had recently completed the ‘Energize’ programme.

The Energize programme delivers science to primary school students around Ireland through practical and engaging lessons to foster interest in the subject so students continue with it to second level education.

Carbon monoxide awareness is an important element of the programme.

Gas Networks Ireland’s Social Sustainability Manager Grainne O’Reilly presented Scoil Naomh Eoin with an iPad,

She said: “After taking part in the ‘Energize’ STEM education programme, students had the chance to channel their creativity into a poster competition, all while raising awareness about the importance of carbon monoxide safety at home.

“There were standout entries from every corner of Ireland, but it was Andrew and Mateo’s creation that truly shone.

“We are pleased to be able to bring programmes like ‘Energize’ to schools nationwide with Gas Networks Ireland.

“Energize explores the world of science, energy and safety in a fun and exciting way.”
