Laois man to represent Ireland at World Powerlifting Championships in South Africa

A Laois man has been selected to represent Ireland on the international stage where he will compete at the upcoming WPC World Powerlifting Championships in South Africa.

Mark Murphy from Ballylinan has described the news as “a huge honour”, with his selection to represent his country coming after “years of hard work, discipline, and dedication.”

Mark currently trains out of Best Body Gym in Carlow, where his “relentless commitment and focus” has seen him earn an opportunity to carry the Irish flag onto the world stage.

The 2025 World Powerlifting Championships will take place in Durban, South Africa, from Tuesday, November 4, to Sunday, November 9.

The Championships are governed by WPC (World Powerlifting Congress), which consists of 46 countries worldwide that participate in the annual event.

The WPC will hold a number of events in Ireland next year, including three events in Limerick in February, March and April before returning to Ireland in June for the 2026 European Championships.

Mark and his partner Sarah Hayden have set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the cost of this “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to wear the green singlet on the world stage.”

There has so far been close to €1,800 raised with the current target set at €2,200.

“Unfortunately, representing Ireland at this level is self-funded, and the costs involved — including travel, accommodation, and entry fees — are substantial,” Mark and Sarah said.

“We’ve launched a GoFundMe campaign to help make this opportunity a reality and would greatly appreciate any support from the local community.”
