Laois man set to complete Dublin Marathon to raise funds following father’s cancer diagnosis

Portlaoise Panthers head coach Jack Scully

A well known Laois man is set to run the Dublin City Marathon in October to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

Portlaoise’s Jack Scully, who is the current manager of Portlaoise Panther’s men’s basketball team, will take on the feat next month.

In January of this year, the Scully family were rocked when dad Kevin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Son Jack said he felt powerless to help his dad so he believes that trying to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society is the best thing he could do.

He said: “On October 26, I’ll be running the Dublin City Marathon, and I’m using this opportunity to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

“In January 2025, my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

“Like so many families, we’ve learned how powerless you can feel when faced with such a diagnosis.

“While we can’t change the outcome, we can make a difference by supporting the work of those who can.

“I’ve seen firsthand the incredible support the Irish Cancer Society provides.

“From free information and counselling to practical care services, they are there for patients and families every step of the way.

“They also fund life-saving research, campaign for better policies, and work tirelessly to raise awareness and promote prevention.

“Every donation helps them continue this vital work. If you’d like to support, you can do so through the link here.”
