Sinn Féin Senator Maria McCormack has called on the Minister for Health and the HSE to urgently intervene in the case of a Laois nursing home.
This is following the news earlier this week that HIQA has gone to Portlaoise District Court seeking to remove the its registration under Section 59 of the Health Act 2007.
The case relates to Droiminín Nursing Home, which is now at the centre of serious concerns raised by HIQA inspectors after an inspection earlier this month.
Senator McCormack said: “This is their home — and now residents are being made homeless.
“These are some of the most vulnerable people in our community, and they deserve security, dignity, and reassurance about their future
“HIQA have clearly found issues here, and those issues must be addressed without delay.
“But this is where the Minister for Health and the HSE must now step in.
“Whether this nursing home is facing a temporary or permanent closure, families need answers.
“The Minister and the HSE must either work with the operator to resolve immediate issues or step in directly to guarantee that residents are cared for and that no one is left without a home.”
The Laois based Senator added that the crisis highlights deeper problems in the system.
She said: “Families in Laois and across the country are being hit with extortionate charges in private nursing homes while standards of care and oversight too often fall short.
“This case underlines the urgent need for reform and proper investment in elder care.
“I am calling on the Minister to act now, to meet with families, and to ensure clear contingency plans are put in place immediately.”
Senator McCormack confirmed she will be raising the matter in the Seanad this week.
She said: “Residents cannot be left in limbo.
“The Minister must outline what supports will be provided to families and what steps will be taken to ensure residents are cared for with dignity and respect, today and into the future.”
