Night Time Economy Grant Initiative extended for Portlaoise cafés

Laois County Council General

Laois County Council has announced that the Night Time Economy Grant initiative for Portlaoise cafes has been extended.

Following on from the first grant initiative which took place in July, the scheme is being extended to the night of Friday, October 31.

Laois County Council is calling for Portlaoise cafés to get involved and apply for this funding which will facilitate extended opening hours on the evening of Halloween.

This initiative aims to diversify nightlife by expanding evening options, offering an enhanced experience for residents, workers, and visitors alike.

It also aims to stimulate the economy by increasing dwell time, encourage additional footfall, and increase revenue streams for cafés during evening hours.

The types of programming we envisage and encourage include live performances from local bands, intimate acoustic and DJ sets, spoken word and poetry, comedy, book clubs, workshops and tastings, and themed nights.

A spokesperson said: “We also encourage programming that appeals to a youth audience, creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all.

“The successful applicants must commit to extending their opening hours by at least two hours after 6 pm and enhancing their night-time offering.

Cafés located in Portlaoise that can host events and are interested in piloting evening and night-time events are encouraged to apply.

A spokesperson said: “All funds must be drawn down within two weeks of the event completion.

“The max grant payable is €750 or 75% of overall costs, whichever is the lessor.
