The Republic of Ireland kept their World Cup hopes alive last night as they defeated Portugal 2-0 at the Aviva Stadium.
It was an incredible occasion in a sold out stadium with more than 50,000 people in attendance – an an extra special one for one young Laois boy.
Eight-year-old Ben Kavanagh was lucky enough to be a mascot on the night.
Stradbally native Ben is the eldest son of Jamie and Carol Kavanagh and attends St Colman’s National School.
The 2nd Class student plays soccer for T&S United and football for Stradbally GAA – where he is a member of their U-9 teams.
Last night, he was treated to an incredible experience where he got to walk out with the Portugal team where he was accompanied by Manchester United full back Diogo Dalot – and got to stand feet away from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Before the game, Ben got his own space in one of the dressing rooms and was then provided with his own jersey to wear.
As for the game itself, Hungary’s win over Armenia meant that if Ireland lost against the fifth best ranked team in the world, their campaign would be over.
They started well though and took the lead in the 17th minute when Josh Cullen’s corned was headed into the danger area by Liam Scales where Troy Parrott finished it.
The Irish fans were in dreamland then just before half time when the AZ Alkmaar striker netted his second.

Ronaldo then saw red just before the hour mark after lashing out at Dara O’Shea and Ireland saw out the remainder of the game.
The 2-0 victory is the most high profile win that Ireland have had since they beat Germany 1-0 ten years ago.
They now head to Budapest on Sunday where their 2026 World Cup dream can only continue with another win.
