Big Laois involvement as DCU make it five Ladies Division 1 league titles in a row

There was big Laois involvement as DCU made it five Division 1 Ladies league titles in a row last night.

DCU had Laois manager Stephen Duff in charge while Shanahoe’s Eimear Barry was part of his management team.

While on the pitch, Faye McEvoy (Ballyroan) and Aoife Gorman (Timahoe) played their part.

DCU beat UU Jordanstown in Round 1 and UCD, who had Portlaoise’s Ciara Crowley in their ranks in Round 2.

In Round 3, DCU lost their first match since March 2022 when they were beaten away against Queens Belfast.

This meant that DCU had to go to the Mardyke for a semi final against UCC.

They contained St Joseph’s forward Emily Lacey but DCU managed to get the better of them and went forward to face University of Limerick last night.

UL lost to UCC in Round 1, beat UG in Round 2 and defeated Mary I in Round 3 – who had Katie Donoghue (Timahoe) on their team.

The final was played in miserable wind and rain which made conditions very difficult.

DCU went five points to no score up after 20 minutes thanks to points from Aisling Hanly (Roscommon), Eva Gallagher (Donegal), Katie Doe (Kerry) and Aoife Cullen (Wexford).

DCU led 0-8 to 0-2 at half time and as conditions worsened, they failed to score in the second half but had done enough to win 0-8 to 0-4.

Attention now turns to the O’Connor cup after Christmas where DCU are aiming to win their fourth consecutive championship.
