Laois IFA President to join Mercosur protest in Strasbourg next week

IFA President Francie Gorman confirmed that he will travel to Strasbourg in France next week for a Mercosur protest organised by the French farm organisation the FNSEA and COPA COGECA.

COPA COGECA is the umbrella body for EU farm organisations and co-operatives.

There are farm organisations from all 27 Member States, including IFA and ICOS from Ireland. IFA President Francie Gorman is a Vice President of COPA.

The protest will take place outside the European Parliament in Strasbourg where MEPs will be meeting next week.

“For the next phase of this campaign, we will be working in lockstep with our colleagues in COPA COGECA and our fellow farm organisations in Europe,” he said.

The second day of IFA’s AGM today was addressed by Ksenija Simovic, a trade expert with COPA COGECA and IFA Brussels Director Liam MacHale.

“We will be meeting the Irish MEPs while we are in Strasbourg next week.

“There are 720 MEPs in the Parliament, of which Ireland has 14, so we need to activate all farm organisations across Europe to lobby all MEPs,” he said.

It’s expected that there will be 1,000 tractors on the streets in Strasbourg to coincide with the plenary meeting of the European Parliament.
