ESB Networks complete major upgrade ‘strengthening Portlaoise electricity infrastructure’

ESB Networks has successfully completed a critical infrastructure project in Portlaoise, significantly reinforcing the reliability of the network in the Midlands region.

This involved the uprating of two 31.5 MVA transformers to 63 MVA, doubling capacity and enabling new customer homes, businesses, and farms to connect to the electricity network.

Completed in just 24 weeks, the upgrade ensures that the electricity network is better equipped to meet growing electricity demand.

The upgrade also guarantees the integration of renewable energy sources as Ireland accelerates its transition to a low-carbon future.

“Strengthening our electricity network is essential as our population grows, our economy expands, and more renewable energy comes on stream.” says Laois Fine Gael TD Willie Aird.

“This investment ensures that Portlaoise and the Midlands are well placed to benefit from a secure, modern, and resilient electricity system.”

The works were delivered by ESB Networks, ESB Engineering and Major Projects (E&MP), EirGrid, and delivery partners Omexom, Kilcawley Construction, and TLI Group.

Alan Rossiter, Strategy and Network Development Manager of ESB Networks informs that “This upgrade forms part of ESB Networks’ broader strategy to future-proof Ireland’s electricity infrastructure.”

“By enhancing the capacity of key substations like Portlaoise, we are ensuring that the electricity network can continue to deliver safe, secure, and sustainable electricity to homes, farms, businesses, and communities across the country.”

As Ireland’s energy landscape evolves, ESB Networks remains committed to delivering the infrastructure needed to support a clean electric future through creating a smarter, more resilient network that can meet the needs of a decarbonised society.
