Heroes, stories, characters and legends of the past to be celebrated at popular Laois St Patrick’s Day Parade

Once again, Mountrath will come alive this St Patrick’s Day as the Mountrath Festival Committee prepares for a vibrant celebration of community, creativity and local pride – and organisers are inviting everyone to be part of the tale.

The parade will begin at 12:30pm from the grounds of St Fintan’s GAA, promising a lively afternoon of colour, music, entertainment and family fun.

This year’s theme, “Legends Galore,” encourages participants to celebrate legendary heroes, stories, characters and moments past and present through imaginative floats, costumes and performances.

“Every legend has a story… and this one starts with you,” said Julie Bennett, PRO for the Mountrath Festival Committee.

But the festivities won’t stop there as the Square will be full of entertainment from 11am, showcasing the very best of Irish culture with music, entertainment and plenty of atmosphere for families and visitors to enjoy.

Local businesses, clubs, teams and community groups are encouraged to get involved by entering a float, marching, volunteering and helping to sponsor the event.

Anyone interested in taking part is encouraged to sign up or contact the committee through social media.

“It’s the people who take part, volunteer, organise and support the parade that truly shape the day.” notes Julie Bennett.

“Together, we’re not just putting on an event we’re creating memories and making history for our small community.”

To recognise the incredible effort and creativity on display, trophies will be awarded for Best Shop Window, Best Overall Entry, Best Walking Group, Best Group and Best Business Entry.

“This is our parade, our community, and our time to shine,” James Kelly, Chairperson of the Mountrath Festival Committee said.

“We’re hoping to make 2026 our biggest, brightest and most entertaining parade yet but we can’t do it without everyone getting involved.”

He added: “Events like this are only possible thanks to the generosity of local businesses and volunteers.

“We are actively seeking support and sponsorship from across the community to help us deliver a day everyone can be proud of, and we’d love to hear from anyone who can get involved.”
