Coss with the winner as Athlone Town stun Waterford

Colm Coss - third from the left in the back row - represented Athlone Town at the launch of the SSE Airtricity League in the Aviva Stadium this week

Mountmellick man Colm Coss was the match winner for Athlone Town as they caused a shock on the opening night of the SSE Airtricity League season.

Coss struck in the 88th minute as the home side recorded a 1-0 win over First Division title favourites Waterford Utd. Stradbally’s Garry Comerford was on the Waterford team.

Elsewhere on the opening night of the League of Ireland, there was mixed fortunes for Laois players.

Portlaoise’s Chris Mulhall came off the bench during Limerick FC’s 5-1 home win over Sligo Rovers. Mulhall, who was Limerick’s top scorer last season, replaced hat-trick hero, Brazilian Rodrigo Tosi, as the home side made an emphatic winning start on their return to the top tier.

There was disappointment for Rathdowney’s Shane Keegan as his first game as Galway Utd ended with a 1-0 home loss to Drogheda Utd, the winner coming in the 81st minute. Portarlington’s Aaron Conway was on the bench for Galway.

Clonaslee man Niall Corbet wasn’t on the UCD squad as they started their First Division campaign with a 1-0 win over Cabinteely.
