Fitzgibbon Cup Final

IT Carlow’s fairytale run in the Fitzgibbon Cup came to an end on Saturday afternoon as champions Mary Immaculate College proved too strong in the final in Galway.

Following on from Friday’s extra time win over UCC, the Carlow side, managed by DJ Carey and with Michael Dempsey among the backroom team, couldn’t repeat those heroics.

Again four Laois players started for Carlow – Enda Rowland, Dwayne Palmer, Cha Dwyer and Stephen Maher – while Colm Stapleton was part of the Mary I squad.

Mary I led 0-16 to 0-8 at the break and although Maher once again top scored for Carlow, the game was as good as over midway through the second half when the Limerick college led 2-20 to 0-15.

Carlow battled to the end and Maher got a late goal but there was no doubting where the cup was heading.
