Wins for Rathdowney-Errill and Abbeyleix in opening round of hurling league

Father and son from Trumera to play in second IHC final

The Laois Shopping Centre ACHL Division 1 season got underway on Sunday with wins for Rathdowney-Errill and Abbeyleix.

Rathdowney-Errill were made work hard by a Portlaoise team playing their first competitive game under Cheddar Plunkett. Portlaoise led 1-5 to 0-6 at half time having played with the wind but Rathdowney-Errill battled back in the second half and pulled clear in the last ten minutes to win by 1-17 to 1-9.

Paddy McKane impressed on the frees for the winners while Tadhg Dowling got the goal.

Abbeyleix proved much too strong for neighbours Ballinakill in their game on the 3G pitch in Heywood. With Eoin Reilly getting their goal and leading the way in the scoring, Abbeyleix led 1-13 to 0-1 at half time and eventually finished 1-19 to 0-6 winners.

The games between Castletown and Camross and Clough-Ballacolla and Borris-Kilcotton were both postponed.
