St Joseph’s get league campaign off to winning start

St Joseph’s 2-13 Stradbally 2-7

Laois Shopping Centre ACFL Division 1A

St Joseph’s got their 2017 ACFL Division 1A season off to a winning start thanks to a six-point win away to Stradbally this evening.

In a clash between two sides with championship ambitions, St Joseph’s were the ones that laid down the early marker.

They were well on top in the opening half and a goal from Danny Hickey as well as points from James Smith, Dylan Doyle, Mattie Campion, Cian Maher and Mick Keogh had them in a commanding 1-10 to 0-4 lead at the break.

Stardbally improved considerably in the second half and goals from Conor Delaney and Jody Dillon helped them to reduce the gap to a point by the 45th minute.

But St Joseph’s arrested the slide and a goal from Mattie Campion with eight minutes remaining was enough to give them some breathing space and they pushed on to win by six points.

As this was a re-arranged first round game, neither side have much time to recover and both are back in action again at the weekend – Stradbally away to Arles-Killeen on Saturday and St Joseph’s at home to O’Dempsey’s on Sunday.
