CCFL Division 1 Cup Final

Portlaoise Shamrocks were crowned CCFL Division 1 Cup champions yesterday following a 3-1 victory over Walsh Island Shamrocks in Clara.

The Portlaoise side, who had been pipped for the league title by their opponents last year, didn’t have it all their own way in this battle of the Shamrocks and they went behind after 20 minutes.

But this seemed to spur the Laois side into action and they equalised in the 35th minute when Brendan Lacumbre’s excellently struck volley found the back of the net.

And things got even better for Portlaoise eight minutes later when they were awarded a penalty. Striker Kevin Fitzpatrick was fouled in the area and picked himself up to score and send his side into the half time break with a 2-1 lead.

Walsh Island went in search of the equaliser in the second half but Portlaoise Shamrocks wrapped up the game with eight minutes to play.

Brian Farrell swung in a delightful corner and Kevin Fitzpatrick rose highest to head the ball into the net and seal the victory.
