Live register figures continue to drop in Laois

The number of people on the live register in Laois continues to drop with 5,609 in the county now classed as looking for work.

This represents a drop of 30 in the past month, as figures for April were released.

The number is dropping consistently over the year, with a total of 5,811 on the live register in the first month of the year.

The largest number of people on the live register in April are in Portlaoise – 2,895, with a further 1,940 on the live register in Portarlington and 774 in Rathdowney.

The live register is not designed as a measurement of unemployment as it includes people who are legitimately working part time and signing on part time.

However, it does give an indication of the amount of people not in full-employment or seeking employment.

Laois and the midlands in general was particularly hit in the past decade by the economic crash due to a high dependency on construction jobs.

The is also a lack of significant employment in the county with an estimated 10,000 people commuting from Laois on a daily basis, most of whom travel to Dublin.
