O’Dempsey’s win again to stay in hunt for league final place

Two first-half goals from Eoin Finlay and one from Johnny Kelly paved the way for O’Dempsey’s to move within a point of leaders St Joseph’s and three ahead of third-placed Portlaoise in ACFL Division 1A.

They have a game more played than both of those sides but they are in a strong position to compete for a Division 1 final place with just rounds of games remaining.

While the sides were level at 0-3 each after 15 minutes on Saturday evening, three O’Dempsey’s goals before the break had them well in control at half time. Finlay goaled in the 15th and 22nd minute and Kelly got their third three minutes before the break. As the sides switched ends, O’Dempsey’s led 3-8 to 0-5. The result was never in doubt throughout the second half.

There is a break from Division 1 games next weekend before the action resumes again on June 8 with the final four rounds played over consecutive weekends. O’Dempsey’s have still to play The Heath, Graiguecullen, Stradbally and Arles-Killeen.

Ballyroan remain at the bottom of the table and they are probably going to have to win at least two of their remaining fixtures to avoid the drop. Their next three games are at home – to Stradbally, Arles-Killeen and St Joseph’s and they finish the league campaign away to Portlaoise.
