Man in his 70s killed in Carlow car crash

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a hit and run

A man in his 70s has died following a road traffic accident in Carlow this morning.

The accident happened on the Kilkenny Road just after the Woodford Dolmen Hotel between 8 and 8:30am, according to reports on KCLR FM by Dean Egan.

That stretch of road is now closed and a technical examination of the scene is being carried out.

The man was driving a silver Volkswagen Polo, and Gardaí are anxious to speak to anybody who was in the area this morning, or who seen the car in question.

The accident brings to five the number of deaths in accidents over the weekend. A woman was killed in Rialto in Dublin after being hit by the Luas, a man in his 70s was killed after crashing his tractor in Sligo, a male motorcyclist (aged 26) died after colliding with three cars in Westmeath, while a man in his 20s died after a single car collision in Monaghan.

There was also a farm fatality in the Derrylin area of Fermanagh on Thursday when a man in his 40s was killed.
