Brazen thieves steal cylinder from house

Garda

Gardai are investigating the theft of a water cylinder from a house in Harristown, Arles which they believe is connected to a similar recent theft from Arles Killeen GAA Club.

The cylinder was taken from the house last week within days of the incident at the GAA club.

A garda spokesperson said the thefts may be an indication that copper has risen in value recently.

They urged people to be vigilant on property security and also to take precautions while away on holidays, particularly during the summer months.

Anyone with information is asked to contacted Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100.

While a copper cylinder is relatively valuable, it is the damage caused in the aftermath of the theft which is most significant.

The theft of such cylinders results in flooding on the property. There are also considerable costs associated with the replacement of the cylinder, reconnecting electrics etc which require qualified tradesmen.

There is also considerable inconvenience from such thefts as properties are left without water for showers and hot water in the property until the cylinder is replaced and reconnected.

Following the incident at the GAA grounds, Arles-Killeen said they would look to make their premises more secure.

Some flooding took place there, with a immersion ripped out, along with the removal of the cylinder.

Security

“We are going to have to upgrade our security and put in steel doors. The only thing we had of value in the dressing rooms was the copper cylinder and 6 O’Neills footballs which will cost €300 to replace,” club chairman David Warren said.

However, Mr Warren said apart from the items taken, there is nothing of value on the premises which would be worth stealing.

“This was just wanton vandalism,” Mr Warren said. A number of incidents in the area has led them to believe that the acts were carried out by local people.
